Offer Development and Innovation (ODI)

The capability to repeatedly create propositions a competitor cannot copy. Three phases: needs analysis, offer ideation, value proposition.

Offer Development and Innovation is the first stage of the Strategic Customer Planning Cycle and the intellectual spine of the method. Its premise is that most B2B firms cannot answer the customer’s one real question, what is this worth to me, and that this is not a sales failure or a marketing failure. It is a missing organisational capability. ODI names that capability.

It runs in three phases. Customer needs analysis builds contextual intelligence on the customer’s business: root causes rather than symptoms, the difference between what the board is trying to achieve and what the buyer has been asked to purchase. Offer ideation is where cross-functional creativity meets commercial reality, diverging with the five sources of value and converging with a hard cull. The customer value proposition phase compresses the result into something that can be said in two sentences and argued in a corridor.

Why it matters now: AI commoditises product differentiation, procurement now wields the same AI as suppliers, and innovation cycles have compressed from years to months. Product-feature advantage is a race you cannot win. The durable moat is the capability to keep creating propositions that are hard to copy.
