The Strategic Customer Planning Cycle
ODI, value sell, value capture: three stages run as a compounding loop, at the level of a sector, a channel or a single key customer.
The Strategic Customer Planning Cycle is the three-stage loop at the centre of the Value Matters method: Offer Development and Innovation, then value selling, then value capture. It is the tri-circle diagram on this site, and it is deliberately a cycle rather than a line. Suppliers become strategic to a customer by running it more times, and better, than anyone else serving the account.
It works at three levels: a sector, a channel, or one key customer. Underneath the three stages sit eight phases: customer needs analysis, offer ideation and the customer value proposition under ODI; the value pitch, which is the internal sale, and the value sell under value selling; customer value capture, supplier value capture and performance review, which is coaching rather than inspection, under value capture. The same cycle is the framework in the book, the syllabus of the KAM Development Programme, and the navigator of the planning tools, so that teaching the method, using the tools and running the account are one motion rather than three.

Offer Development and Innovation (ODI)
The capability to repeatedly create propositions a competitor cannot copy. Three phases: needs analysis, offer ideation, value proposition.
Value selling
Selling the proposition twice: first inside your own company, then to the customer's decision-making unit in their financial language.
Value capture
Proving the value landed, in both directions: in the customer's KPIs and in your own board's numbers.
Key account management
The continuous delivery of value through the intersection of sales, strategy and innovation.
Customer needs analysis
The diagnosis. Contextual intelligence about the customer's world, analytical depth about the problems underneath the problems, and clarity about who feels them.
Offer ideation
Diverge before you converge. The machine's gift is width; the cull is yours.
Performance review
Not an audit of a document. A working session on a living strategy, run as coaching rather than inspection.
