The value maturity map
Organisational readiness against commercial performance: the summary grid the diagnostic's four themes roll up into.
The value maturity map is the fifth grid in the Value Edge Diagnostic and the only one without a question set. Its horizontal axis, organisational readiness, is drawn from the scores on the other four themes. Its vertical axis, commercial performance, is your own honest reading of growth, margin, retention and the quality of your customer relationships.
The four boxes are Investigate, where both are low and the first job is to find out why; Refine, where the machinery is ready but the numbers have not followed; Assess, where performance is good and nobody is quite sure what is holding it up; and Mastery. The interesting box is Assess. A business can perform well for years on relationships, incumbency and a product that happened to be right, and only find out how little of that was built when a competitor arrives with AI and a better proposition. Mastery is not a permanent state. It is a discipline, and the map is how you check you are still practising it.
